powered by FreeFind Print-friendly page Translating Word Problems: Keywords (page 1 of 2) Sections: Keywords, Worked examples The hardest thing about doing word problems is taking the English problem and translating it into math. Usually, once you get the math equation, you're fine. The actual math involved is often fairly simple. But actually getting the equation can seem nearly impossible. What follows is a list of hints and helps. To really learn how to do word problems, you'll just have to practice, practice, practice. The first step to effectively working word problems is to read the problem entirely. Don't try to start solving anything when you've only read half a sentence. Try to get a feel for the whole problem, and try to see what information you have, and what you still need. The second step is to work in an organized manner. Label variables with what they stand for, draw and label pictures neatly, and explain your reasoning as you go along. And you need to determine what the problem is actually asking for. You need to do this for two reasons:
  • Working clearly will help you think clearly, and

    Basic Word Problems
A word problem in algebra is the equivalent of a story problem in math. When you solved story problems in your math class you had to decide what information you had and what you needed to find out. Then you decided what operation to use. Addition was used to find a totals and subtraction was used to find changes in values. The approach to solve problems with algebra is usually quite different. Word problems are solved by separating information from the problems into two equal groups, one for each side of an equation. Examine this problem. Sara has 15 apples and 12 oranges. How many pieces of fruit does she have? We know that the sum of 15 and 12 is equal to the the total amount of fruit. As explained in the Basics of the Equation lesson, an unknown number or value is represented by a letter. The total number of pieces of fruit is unknown, so we will represent that amount with x . When the value that a particular variable will represent is determined, it is

    Introduction:
The Word Problems are listed by grade and, within each grade, by theme. I always find that providing a seasonal worksheet helps keep my daughter excited about doing her work. The grade levels are a guideline please use your judgment based on your child's ability and eagerness (my eldest daughter always used a grade below whereas my younger daughter seems to be a grade or two above go figure). Keep in mind that Math Word Problems require reading, comprehension and math skills so a child who is good at basic math equations may struggle more than you would expect when faced with math word problems. All word problems are dynamic (in other words, they regenerate a new problem each time you open them or click refresh on your browser). The words in the particular problem will not change but the numbers will. Children who struggle converting a word problem into a math equation will find it reassuring (confidence builder) to revisit the same verbal clues with different numbers, so consider printing a couple regenerations of each problem. In a classroom setting you can provide a problem to partners or a group of students to solve together and then provide a regeneration of the same problem for the children to do solo.

Word problems that lead to simple linear equations
Word or story problems give us a first glimpse into how mathematics is used in the real word . To be solved, a word problem must be translated into the language of mathematics, where we use symbols for numbers - known or unknown, and for mathematical operations. When all is said and done, a word problem, stripped from inessential details, translates into one or more mathematical equations of one kind or another. After the equations have been solved, the result can be translated back into the ordinary language. Mathematical language is clear and succinct. Mathematical formulation contains only what is important in a problem. But how does one know what is important and what is not, what is essential and what can be dispensed with? One simple approach to find out is to try changing the problem a small piece at a time. Play by ear: pay attention to those small modifications that do not distort the meaning of the problem.

There are several steps involved in mastering the art of solving word problems. In this quest you will be asked to accomplish four specific things.
First - You will prepare a list of terms to use in decoding word problems. A worksheet will be available. Second - You will use your list of terms to decode several practice problems found on-line. Third - When you feel you have mastered the art of decoding word problems, you will take an online assessment. Fourth - (part one) Using your list of code words, write two word problems appropriate for your grade level. Each problem is to be accompanied by a step by step explanation of how to "tame" the word problem. Fourth - (part two) Last of all, write two word problems appropriate for students three years below your grade level. Include a step by step explanation with each problem. If your teacher can work out the details, you should present these problems to a class three years below your grade level.

Master Math Word Problems can help sharpen skills through practice. Third through fifth graders learn to watch for key words and translate those into mathematical operations. Students can learn new math skills, practice logic, get extended practice with word problems, but most of all they learn that they must read the problem. With regular practice your students may become master math word problem solvers.

Trigonometry is used on a daily basis in the workplace. Since trigonometry means "triangle measure", any profession that deals with measurement deals with trigonometry as well. Carpenters, construction workers and engineers, for example, must possess a thorough understanding of trigonometry. In word problems, the formulas remain the same: Word problems introduce two new vocabulary terms: Angle of Elevation The angle of elevation is always measured from the ground up. Think of it like an elevator that only goes up. It is always INSIDE the triangle. In the diagram at the left, x marks the angle of elevation of the top of the tree as seen from a point on the ground. You can think of the angle of elevation in relation to the movement of your eyes. You are looking straight ahead and you must raise (elevate) your eyes to see the top of the tree.

Here's an easy word problem: Suzy is ten years older than Billy, and next year she will be twice as old as Billy. How old are they now? If you don't use algebra, you probably have to solve it by trial and error. This sometimes works fine. Here it is a little slow. And, in other problems, it is next to impossible. 1. Translate into equations With algebra, the solution is easy. The only problem is to convert the above sentence into equations, because equations are what we need to use algebra. How is this? S=10+B S+1=2(B+1) That is a direct translation of the word problem. I used S to represent Suzy's age (this year), and B for Billy's age. I could use other letters, but these are easier to remember. Do you see how this translation is done? "Suzy is ten years older than Billy" is an equation (S=10+B), but is in words instead of symbols. "Next year she will be twice as old as Billy" is a little more complicated, but is just another equation (S+1=2(B+1)). The translation process seldom gets much more difficult than the above. But, you may have to weed out extra information. If I had started the word problem with, "Suzy is six inches taller than Billy, and...," you are getting extra info which has nothing to do with the problem. You would have an extra equation (Z=6+L, where Z is Suzy's height, and L is Billy's height). You would find that this equation does not affect the other two equations, at all. You could write down this equation, but you would end up solving the other two equations.

Remember the famous words of Albert Einstein "Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics, I assure you that mine are greater." Background W hen you take a real-world situation and translate it into math, you are actually 'expressing' it; hence the mathematical term 'expression'. Everything that is left of the equal sign is considered to be something you are expressing. Everything to the right of the equal sign (or inequality) is yet another expression. Simply stated, an espression is a combination of numbers, variables (letters) and operations. Expressions have numerical value. Equations are sometimes confused with expressions. To keep these two terms separate, simply ask yourself if you can answer with a true/false. If so, you have an equation, not an expression which would have numerical value. When simplifying equations, one often drops expressions such as 7-7 that equal 0.

    Guide Entry to 80.07.09:
Word problems are not a unit to be covered and then forgotten, they are a unit to be returned to throughout the year. The paper is motivated by Polya’s book How to Solve It. It also presents the material mindful of the students who may believe they have “Math Anxiety.” The unit reviews the solutions of word problems starting with the concept of a variable. This may be used independently by the mature student who feels a need for improving word problem skills. Teachers are referred to Polya for greater detail. The paper is introductory. It serves as a reminder for those who have read Polya or remember teaching word problems more clearly at an earlier date, but now cannot see why students are having difficulty. The unit relates the solution of word problems to a process or scheme as given by Polya: 1) Understanding the problem, 2) Devising a plan, 3) Carrying out the plan, and 4) Reviewing the solution and the problem. (Recommended for all Algebra courses.)

    SINGLE-DIGIT MULTIPLICATION
This activity was designed to help you practice basic multiplication with word problems. You're going to see a variety of problems that ask you to multiply the numbers between one (1) and ten (10). All of the questions combine random values. This quiz works with longer word problems. Even with the words, you should be able to finish many of these problems in your head. Remember that they are just the same as problems with numbers, just a little wordy.
    Good luck and have fun.
    DIRECTIONS
This is one of the NumberNut four-card activities. Your question will be displayed at the top of the screen. Under that question, you will see four (4) possible answers. Just click on the card with the correct answer. The next screen will show you the correct answer.
You get a happy face for every correct answer and a sad face for every wrong answer. The quiz is over after ten (10) questions. Take the quiz again and again because all of the questions are random. Chances are, you'll get a new quiz every time. It's good practice to learn these basic arithmetic operations.

    54. Solving Rate-Time-Distance And Other Rate Problems
That is what Word problems do. Further, what makes them difficult is that the components they give you, or ask you to find can involve variable distances,
    http://www.garlikov.com/math/RateTime.html
    "Rate" Problems and Principles
by Rick Garlikov Rate x Time = Distance Problems One of the students on a math-help forum wrote: > Plane A leaves los Angeles for York @ 500 mph, at the same time
    > plane b leaves from York for Los Angeles @650mph. Assume the distance from
    > los Angeles to York is 3000 miles, find how long it will take them to meet.
    > (2.6 hours)
    > I know the answer, but I don't understand the reasoning or how to get it. This was his second attempt at sending us this problem. The first time, he left out the numbers and just wanted us to help with the concept, which was okay; but, more importantly, he stated the problem mistakenly that first time. What he wrote then was: "Two planes leave at the same time going in opposite directions at different speeds. How long will it take them to meet? They both travel the same distance." We wrote back that having the numbers might be helpful, and that it wasn't clear whether they were flying toward each other from different locations or whether they were initially flying away from each other from the same place and then going around the world to cross paths on the way, or what. But more importantly, he had stated a contradiction - since there was no way the planes could fly the same distance if they flew for the same amount of time at different rates. For example, if I drive 90 mph and you drive 45 mph, then no matter how long we drive, as long as we drive the same amount of time as each other, I will cover twice the distance you do. The faster vehicle will always go further over the same amount of time.

    Word Problem
Everyone loves Word Problems. You know, like: Two snakes leave Burbank in separate cars. The green tree snake drives a 2005 Prius with seven gyroscopic wheels and XM satellite radio. The midget faded rattler drives a late-model Lincoln Town Car that runs on bio-diesel and hate. The eastbound 134 is closed due to a firestorm and the I-5 is covered in sewage thanks to a conservation mishap by Friends of the L.A. River. Which snake gets 35% off the laser vaginal rejuvenation procedure? My word problem has to do with the fantastic tale of the Ron Paul Blimp, which I'll be riding next week from North Carolina to Washington, D.C., barring terrible ice storms and/or terrorist shenanigans. But first I'm flying to Norfolk, on a standard passenger jet, and must then rent a car to drive to the airship launch site, an hour south of Norfolk, and then I'll supposedly be dropped off at the Ron Paul Blimp Rally in D.C., but then I'm a four-hour drive from my car and suitcase and then another hour back north to the airport, where my flight home leaves two days after I arrive by airship in Washington. What the hell? There must be a way to make this work without hiring a bunch of drivers and gofers and manservants. Whether my personal journey ends in triumph or tears, giant blimps used for political stunts are guaranteed to be awesome, and no political campaign can match the antics of the Dr. Congressman

Literature/Math Crossover Lesson Plan - Word Problems
    Author: Marc Sheehan
    Description:
I will read the story "I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today!" from the Dr. Seuss book of the same title. I think that this book is easy enough for my first grade class to understand. It is also an entertaining selection.
    Grade: First
Materials: "I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today!" by Dr. Seuss, pencils and paper for activity
    Time Required: Approximately 30-35 minutes
Content Objectives: This story involves subtraction. The main character reduces the number of opponents through various excuses. The number goes from 30 to 29 to 22, etc. It can be seen as a giant word problem.
Process Objectives: It is important for students to build up operational skills like subtraction. This story is also an interesting example of a word problem if the cat (the main character) started with 30 tigers and ended with 1, how many tigers were sent away?
Intelligences Engaged: I think that this activity will engage the students word comprehension abilities and also their abilities to perform math operations.
Links To Long-Term Planning: The children have already been introduced to subtraction. I plan to build upon that knowledge by introducing them to word problems. I think that they have the necessary skills of word comprehension and knowledge of subtraction to work a word problem.
