Beside topoi which do perfectly comply with the description given in the Topics , there is an important group of topoi in the Rhetoric which contain instructions for arguments not of a certain form, but with a certain predicate (for example, that something is good, or honorable, or just, or contributes to happiness etc.). While those material topoi topos In I.2, 1358a2-35 Aristotle distinguishes between general/common topoi on the one hand and specific topoi topoi are specific to deliberative, other to epideictic, and still others to juridical speech. Roughly, it is clear that the specific topoi can be found in the first and the common topoi in the second book of the Rhetoric . Most interpreters assumed that all common topoi are listed in chapters II.23-24 (for real enthymemes in II.23, for fallacious enthymemes in II.24), but failed to notice that more common topoi can be found in II.19. Further, it may be tempting to call, as some do, the specific

Since the introduction of sheaves into mathematics in the 1940s a major theme has been to study a space by studying sheaves on that space. This idea was expounded by Alexander Grothendieck by introducing the notion of a topos . The main utility of this notion is in the abundance of situations in mathematics where topological intuition is very effective but an honest topological space is lacking; it is sometimes possible to find a topos formalizing the intuition. The greatest single success of this programmatic idea to date has been the introduction of the ©tale topos of a scheme

Whatever its ideology, whether with the intent of uncovering a truer structure of reality or of soothing our anxiety, of exposing myths or of following them through, the outcome of philosophical activity is always the destabilizing, unsettling generation of doubts, of objections, of criticisms.

Within rhetorical invention, the topics or topoi are basic categories of relationships among ideas, each of which can serve as a template or heuristic for discovering things to say about a subject. "Topics of invention" literally means "places to find things." Aristotle divided these into the "Common" and "Special" topics of invention, the former being more general, the latter relevant to each of the three branches of oratory Common Topics Special Topics Definition

Although the topics of invention were the starting places for composing or generating speech or writing within the rhetorical tradition, they were not the only beginning points. From classical antiquity up to the seventeenth century, imitation was equally important for providing material and formal models for students of speaking and writing. In fact, there is room to argue that imitative praxis and pedagogy better account for rhetorical composition historically than do the abstract categories of the topics of invention. See Also

Topoi brings together diverse disciplines from the humanities and earth sciences in common fundamental and theoretical research on the ancient world. The Cluster of Excellence pursues the goal of researching the interdependence of space and knowledge in the civilizations of the Ancient Near East, the Mediterranean, and Black Sea region and parts of the Eurasian steppe from the 6th millennium BC to around AD 500. This is to serve the more fundamental purpose of investigating the spaces, spatial systems, and various types of space-related knowledge as intertwined factors in the development of ancient cultural systems. In Topoi , paradigmatic studies are to investigate the foundations of small-scale structures up to large-scale expansive empires and variously defined and constituted spaces as well. Building on this fundamental research, Topoi will work out a theory of space as a constitutive element in the formation and transformation of cultures and societies of antiquity within an interdisciplinary framework. Berlin and the study of antiquity: Topoi would considerably broaden this collaboration and thus decisively strengthen the academic landscape of Berlin.

Thinking of Something to Say: Topoi
Sometimes when you're thinking about a subject that you might want to write about or even form an opinion about you don't know quite where to start or how to proceed. In rhetorical theory, this stage in the process of developing an argument coming up with ideas, thinking of something to say is called invention (inventio) In the fourth century before Christ, the Greek philosopher Aristotle provided would-be orators with a wealth of topoi (sing. topos) , literally places , intellectual places to explore, in his Rhetoric
In their classic textbook, Writing , Gregory and Elizabeth Cowan (1980) adapted Aristotle's concept for modern use in the form of a heuristic, a sort of thought-provoking questionnaire that helps writers develop a more thorough understanding of a topic as they work through each stage. It has become one of my favorite teaching tools.
As superficially "obvious" as these questions seem, as you work through them there comes a point when you say, "Now that's something worth saying" or "I bet no one has looked at it this way before." Originality doesn't come from nowhere. It comes from asking "obvious" questions and thinking hard about the answers. NO CLICHES.

    Topics (topoi) and commonplaces
When , I'm not sure whether they're differentiating them from commonplaces. I rather think they are not. Following the traditions of classical rhetoric, the 1996 Encyclopedia of Rhetoric and Composition differentiates the two; many contemporary rhetoricians, e.g., Crowley in the first edition of Ancient Rhetorics for Contemporary Students , do not. Here are definitions that may help you see the differences and commonalities between the two terms:
    Topoi
"The topics were for Aristotle, as they have been for rhetoricians since, both the stuff of which arguments are made and the form of those arguments" (Lanham, Handlist of Rhetorical Terms , 1991). In Methodical Memory , Crowley explains that the classical topics ("definition, similarity, difference, contraries, antecedents, consequents, contradictions, cause, effect, and comparison) were advanced by Quintilian and Cicero as "argumentative strategies that were available to any trained rhetor." Helpful details are in the Encyclopedia of Rhetoric and Composition : In Aristotle's definition, topics were "strategies or principles" that enabled rhetorical invention. The sophists and Plato used topoi, but it was Aristotle who enumerated them. He differentiated common and special topics. Among the "common types of arguments" he listed "definition, parts, and cause and effect." His special topics were of two general kinds:

New Media Topoi For us, topoi signify the material and form that an argument takes in new media texts, while commonplaces signify the orienting experiences or modalities, which serve to anchor or reference a reader within the often disorienting experience of navigating and making meaning from a new media text. Here is a list of the topoi we discuss in this text: Genre : Features and structures of textual experiences that a designer can reasonably assume a particular audience will understand based upon common ground experiences with these features across similar texts. Sequence Designer : The primary agent of production whose choices of materialities affect certain aspects of meaning-making within a specific text. Link Audience : The designed, intended agent of meaning-making whose actions, navigations, and experiences with a text will give definition to elements of a new media text. Go back to the last node.

About topos (Definition) There are two related kinds of categories which are called topoi (or alternatively toposes ). First, there is the Grothendieck topos, which was developed by Grothendieck as part of his general reconstruction of algebraic geometry . Second, there is the elementary topos, which was introduced by Lawvere as a setting for work in categorical logic . We give a brief overview of each kind of topos. A Grothendieck topos is a category naturally equivalent to the category of sheaves on some site An elementary topos is category which: The first assumption guarantees the existence of finite limits and colimits as well as power objects . This allows to model basic constructions of set theory such as products disjoint unions intersections , and powersets . It also guarantees that has a terminal object , which corresponds to a singleton set in . We can model elements of an object by morphisms The second assumption means that must have a truth object and a morphism such that if is any monomorphism of , then there is a unique associated characteristic morphism such that the diagram is a pullback square . Speaking loosely, this says that a
